BOSPOAT - Best On Set Photo Of All Time: In A Lonely Place

Posted By Administration, Friday, June 9, 2017

When we talk to producers about what they like about their jobs, there’s an answer that comes up again and again. One of the great joys of being a producer is the opportunity to immerse yourself in unfamiliar worlds. Sometimes those worlds are imaginary, the product of a writer’s inspiration until they’re digitally composed and dropped in during post-production. More often, they’re real places, the sites of real communities and enduring cultures. And they’re just as extraordinary as anything created with a greenscreen.

Case in point: the highlands of Mongolia. The nomadic tribes that roam these wide open spaces have done so for centuries, and for a week, PGA member Graham Ehlers Sheldon was roaming right along with them. “I shot a digital series created by Disney/Portal A called Song Voyage that filmed in Mongolia, Vietnam, Australia and several other countries,” Graham tells us. “Unfortunately I had not packed appropriately for the very windy Mongolian highlands and a local shepherd let me borrow his yak pelt to stay warm. The stylish pelt kept me warm during a full week of shooting in the field.”

So in this photo we have A) a yak pelt, and B) absolutely no one else around as far as the eye can see. We’re not sure it gets much more Mongolian than that. (To satisfy the curiosity of our gear-head readers who only have eyes for the camera that Graham is holding, it’s a Canon C500.) Much thanks to Graham for sharing the photo with us, and to his wife Rin Ehlers Sheldon, who snapped the pic. Here’s hoping they continue to send us amazing photos from whatever far-flung lands their producing work takes them.

We know what you’re thinking. “Best of all time? No way. I’ve got an on-set photo way better than that.” If that’s the case, we dare you to prove it. Submit it to BOSPOAT@producersguild.org. Before you submit, please review the contest rules at producersguild.org/bospoat. Because no matter how great your photo is, we have no desire to get sued over it.
