Saturday, August 31st, over 100 PGA members enjoyed our annual PGA Dodger Day,
for our best-attended Dodger Day ever. This game was a hot ticket even
before the Dodgers began their phenomenal winning streak in June, which might
have had something to do with the free Clayton Kershaw replica jerseys which
were given out the first 40,000 fans.
The Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 2 to 1 in a pitchers’ duel that pitted
the Dodgers’ Chris Capuano against the Padres’ Andrew Cashner. Although
notching seven strikeouts, Capuano spotted the Padres a run when he gave up a
solo home run to Ronny Cedeno in the 4th inning. The Dodgers responded in
the 7th inning with singles by Jerry Hariston, Jr. and Carl Crawford to start
the inning. Adrian Gonzalez hit a single to score Hariston and tie the
score. In the 8th, Mark Ellis’ pinch-hit single cashed in a double by
Skip Schumaker for the tie-breaking run. Brian Wilson and Kenley Jansen
pitched shutout ball in the 8th and 9th innings to preserve the win.
Dodger rookie sensation Yasiel Puig went 0 for 4 at the plate, though in the 4th
inning, he made an amazing one-hop throw from right field to nail Padres
baserunner Rene Rivera trying to score from 2nd base. Brian Wilson and
pitching coach Rick Honeycutt graciously signed autographs next to our PGA
section before the game. Guild members also witnessed a historic feat as
the Dodgers went 23-6 in August, a record for the month.
