There has never been a better or more confusing time to consider entering your film into a festival. While the choices are plenty, the decisions about how to strategize your festival submissions can be overwhelming. Spend an evening with our panel of film festival insiders to gain insight into the process.
Thom Powers, Toronto International Film Festival / DOC NYC
Thom Powers has been the documentary programmer for the Toronto International Film Festival since 2006. He oversaw TIFF’s Mavericks conversation series for nine years and created the TIFF Doc Conference. He curates the digital streaming platform SundanceNOW Doc Club; and serves as the Artistic Director of America’s largest documentary festival DOC NYC and the weekly screening series Stranger Than Fiction. He is the co-host of WNYC’s Documentary of the Week. He programs for the Miami International Film Festival and teaches at the School of Visual Arts. From 2012 to 2014, he was the founding Artistic Director of the Montclair Film Festival in New Jersey. He is a co-founder of the Cinema Eye Honors and the Garrett Scott Documentary Development Grant. He previously spent a decade directing documentaries for HBO, PBS and other outlets; and worked as marketing director and editor at Fantagraphics Books. On Twitter: @thompowers
Cara Cusumano, Tribeca Film Festival
Cara Cusumano is the Senior Programmer for the Tribeca Film Festival. Prior to Tribeca, she programmed for the Hamptons International Film Festival, including curating HIFF’s signature Conflict & Resolution competition and Oscar-qualifying shorts program, and has also worked with film organizations including the Abu Dhabi Film Festival, the Brooklyn International Film Festival, IFP, POV, and Chicken & Egg. She frequently serves on festival juries and panels, including CPH:DOX, SANFIC, Silverdocs, and the Nantucket Film Festival. She holds a degree in English Literature, Film, and Art History from Columbia University’s Barnard College, and a Master of Arts in Cinema Studies from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
David Nugent, Hamptons International Film Festival
David Nugent is the Artistic Director for the Hamptons International Film Festival where he also directs the festival’s annual Screenwriting Lab. He has been a juror for the Student Academy Awards as well as the Sarasota, Newport International, Silverdocs, Galway, Gen Art and Newfest Film Festivals. He has written festival coverage for Indiewire and participated on panels at the Sundance Film Festival, the Dubai Film Festival and IFP’s Independent Film Week & Script to Screen Conference. Nugent is a member of the nominating committee for the Cinema Eye Awards. He has delivered guest lectures at Harvard University and Hunter College and served as a judge for student films at both New York University and the School for Visual Arts. Nugent recently worked as the Program Director for DocuClub and the Director of Programming for the Newport International Film Festival.
Lesli Klainberg, New York Film Festival
LESLI KLAINBERG is an award-winning producer and director whose documentaries have screened at film festivals such as Berlin, Sundance, Outfest and Frameline, and have been broadcast on networks including Cinemax, AMC, A&E, The Independent Film Channel (IFC), WE and PBS. Currently, Lesli is Executive Director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center. Previously, Lesli served as FSLC’s Managing Director and the producer of the New York Film Festival. From 2008 thru 2011, she served as Executive Director of NewFest, the NYC LGBT Film Festival.

Mark Mori is an Academy Award nominated documentary filmmaker and Emmy Award winning TV producer. His films have garnered awards, film festival screenings, theatrical, TV and digital distribution worldwide. His most recent film, BETTIE PAGE REVEALS ALL, was released theatrically in the US in 2013-14.
