Mobile video is consuming viewers' attention at unprecedented levels. According to the Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI), mobile video traffic exceeded 50 percent of total mobile data traffic for the first time in 2012 and it grew to 55 percent of all data traffic by the end of 2014. Larger screen sizes on smartphones, with true HD resolution, are driving greater consumption of mobile video, while new mobile apps are creating a generation of mobile video creators that is unprecedented.

Now, producers are using mobile video tools to create audiences and develop stories for audiences that are global and, increasingly, commercial. The recent Newfronts in New York featured presentations that described ad units for stories told using Vine and Snapchat. The recent SXSW Interactive conference featured celebrity promotions on Meerkat and Periscope. And storytellers are finding ways to extend fan bases with short-form mobile video “broadcasts.”

The value of mobile video apps is clear, and for producers they represent built-in audiences as well as ready-made storytelling platforms for direct, monetizable conversations.
