New York (May 27, 2010) - The Producers Guild of America East held its fifth "Night of The Producer" event last night, May 26, at 7 p.m. at the Scholastic Auditorium in New York City. The event, moderated by Academy Award®-nominated producer Kit Golden, featured an intimate conversation between Academy Award®-winning director Jonathan Demme ("The Silence of the Lambs," "Philadelphia," "Beloved," "Neil Young: Heart of Gold," "Rachel Getting Married") and Emmy® and Golden Globe® Award-nominated Actor/Comedian Denis Leary ("No Cure for Cancer," "Blow," "Monument Ave," "Comics Come Home," "The Job," "Rescue Me").
"Jonathan Demme and Denis Leary are two talented storytellers with a long history of working on both film and television productions in New York , and the Producers Guild was thrilled to have them headline our event," said John Hadity , newly re-elected PGA East Chair. "These guys understand the challenges and joys of shooting in New York and our members really enjoyed learning about their passions, experiences and outlook for the future."
Some highlights from the night’s discussion include:
"'Rescue Me' is really an ongoing memoir of New York City since 9/11,” said Demme.
"The city is a character in the show and I couldn't do it without filming here," responded Leary. "You can do amazing things in this city.”
"Doesn't it feel great to be a New York film person?" added Demme. "There's something to be said for producing in New York .”
"Night of the Producer," a private, invitation-only event, was created as a means of paying tribute to major New York-based producers whose work has left its mark on the entertainment industry and demonstrated the key role played by New York as a thriving base of media production. Honorees are chosen for their embodiment of all things regarded by the PGA East-history, progress, talent, diversity and East-coast sensibility. Past featured guests include David Brown, Linda Ellerbee, Spike Lee, Lorne Michaels, Jane Rosenthal, Bob Greenberg, Scott Rudin and David Picker.
The event followed Tuesday's confirmation and announcement of the PGA East 2010 election results.
