The 3rd Annual Celebration of Diversity was held on Thursday, October 7, 2004 at The Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. The event, presented in association with Daily Variety and Entertainment Industry Foundation, was a warm and gracious tribute to those producers whose work has broadened our industry’s cultural horizons, and to selected productions that have stimulated national discussion on significant social issues.
Last year’s honorees that were recognized for their diverse producing work were: Morgan Freeman, Gordon Davidson, Placido Domingo, Mira Nair and Gail Berman. Also honored was the production, ER.
C O N C E P T: The Celebration of Diversity began in 2002 as a natural extension and enlargement of the Producers Guild's prior event, the Oscar Micheaux Awards. It’s mission is "to celebrate and promote diversity in film, television and new media productions by creating awareness and stimulating discussion of significant social issues." The event is unique in that it honors both filmmakers who have committed themselves to progressive ideals in their work and productions that demonstrate this commitment as well. In 2003, honorees included Salma Hayek, Phil Roman, John Singleton, George Sunga, Christine Kunewa Walker, the Sundance Institute's Native American Initiative, as well as productions, Door to Door, Sesame Street.
The Celebration is not a competitive awards ceremony, but closer in spirit to a party, an intimate and heartfelt salute to those producers and productions who have chosen to broaden our industry's horizons. The event will feature gourmet food, live entertainment and video tributes to our honorees' work. The Celebration of Diversity is a genuinely remarkable event, unique within our industry for its warmth, ideals and sheer entertainment value.
Proceeds from the event fund a scholarship program for minority producing students with financial need.
