Oscar Micheaux Award

Quincy Jones and Tim Reid - recipients for 1999

This award is presented to an individual or individuals whose achievements in film and television have been accomplished despite difficult odds...and who have made a significant creative contribution to the profession of producing.

The Producers Guild is proud to announce that Quincy Jones and Tim Reid will be the recipients of this year's Oscar Micheaux Awards. The PGA Events Committee has set November 10th, 1999 as the date for the awards ceremony. This third edition of the prestigious Micheaux award will be held in The Crystal Room of the Beverly Hills Hotel, reports Events Committee co-chair Diane Robison.

"Quincy Jones and Tim Reid are two outstanding producers and creative artists who have honored us with achievements in every area of the entertainment industry," Robison said. "The PGA Board of Directors was unanimous in choosing these two men who so fully exemplify the tenacity, spirit and entrepreneurial qualities of the great film pioneer, Oscar Micheaux."

Oscar Micheaux was one of the first African-American pioneers in the field of producing. His Oscar Micheaux Film Company became one of the premiere black film companies for more than thirty years, and is an inspiration to scores of filmmakers worldwide. Past honorees include Gordon Parks and Ike Jones.

In 1995, the first Oscar Micheaux honoree, Ike Jones, was the first African-American to graduate from UCLA's film school in 1952. His producing career began in 1966 with the feature film, A Man Called Adam. In 1997, the second honoree was Gordon Parks, world famous Life photographer, and the first black producer/director hired by a major motion picture studio for such films as The Learning Tree (which he wrote) and Shaft.

As a constantly evolving organization, the Producers Guild of America created this prestigious award as part of its on-going mandate to make the role of the Producer a more visible one in our industry, as well as to magnify the vital contributions and broaden the recognition of all Producers.

The evening will include film retrospectives or Mr. Jones' and Mr. Reid's career highlights and special tributes to both men from industry luminaries. For ticket information for the Third Oscar Micheaux Awards, please call the PGA office.
