PGA WIN West is excited to announce the second event in the "How to" series with speakers Claire Best (Owner & CEO of Claire Best & Associates) and Janet Graham Borba (SVP, West Coast Productions, HBO).

This "How to" panel will tackle the specific challenges faced by female producers: moving from film to television, from line-producing to creative producing, from non-fiction to fiction, from $3M to $10M budgets, from entry level to above the line. It will also provide insights into various styles of negotiating and management.

Janet Graham Borba is senior vice president, West Coast Production, for Home Box Office, responsible for supervising production on all HBO original movies and miniseries.  She was named to this position in May 2010. Currently, Borba is working on the series Game of Thrones and Gentleman Jack, as well as overseeing several films and miniseries in development, production or post, such as Fahrenheit 451, My Dinner With Hervé, Chernobyl, Notes From The Field and Paterno. Past projects she’s worked on include the multiple award-winning miniseries Olive Kitteridge, Show Me a Hero, The Pacific, John Adams and Angels in America, and the films Game Change, All The Way, Lackawanna Blues, Something the Lord Made, Iron Jawed Angels, Wizard of Lies, Path to War, The Gathering Storm, Wit and RKO-281. Borba joined HBO as director, Production, HBO Films in 1995, and was promoted to vice president, Production, HBO Films in 2000, and later to senior vice president, Production, HBO Films in 2008.

Prior to HBO, Borba held various producer titles on studio productions including October Films’ Still Breathing, United Artists’ Hackers, Hollywood Pictures’ Camp Nowhere, Miramax’s The Night We Never Met and 20th Century Fox’s Hotshots! between 1991 and 1995. She began her career in Washington, D.C. as a staff economist at the National Grain and Feed Association.  She also worked as a project manager and in Leasing, Acquisitions and Feasibility at GLM Companies, a real estate development firm.

Borba is a member of the advisory board for the Virginia Film Festival and has served as an adjunct professor in the MFA Peter Stark Motion Picture Producing Program at USC. She holds an MFA in Motion Picture Producing from the University of Southern California’s Peter Stark Producing Program, and a BA from the University of Virginia, where she was also an Echols Scholar.

Claire Best is the owner and CEO of the Film and Television Agency Claire Best & Associates which she founded in 2010. The agency includes international clients like this year’s Best Picture Oscar Winner J. Miles Dale, as well as many other Academy, BAFTA, Emmy, Caesar, Lola and Individual Guild award winners and nominees.  The agency represents Producers, Writers, Directors, 1st ADs, Production Designers, Directors of Photography, Costume Designers, Editors, VFX, SFX Make-Up Designers and Composers. Some of the shows it has had recent involvement with include “The Shape of Water”, “Blade Runner 2049”, “Thor: Ragnarok”, “Big Little Lies”, “The Crown”, “Game of Thrones”, “Supergirl”, “Outlander”, among many others. Claire is herself a full voting member of BAFTA and the Television Academy.

Claire joined the representation business in 2002 after spending 6 years at New Line Cinema and Fine Line Features as a Production Executive (physical production). At New Line, Claire oversaw the production of the Academy Award-winning “The Red Violin” and cult hits “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”, “Boiler Room” and “Gummo”, among others. Her producing credits include “How to Lose Your Lover”, “Cleopatra’s Second Husband”, “The Hardly Boys in Hardly Gold” and “Naked Making Lunch”.  Claire started her career in the UK in 1988, working on a documentary about the first ever European Film Awards in Berlin, which was followed by work with Christopher Ralling C.B.E., Michael Gill and Chris Rodley (“The Buried Mirror”, “Motion and Emotion: The Films of Wim Wenders”, “Sam Peckinpah: Man of Iron”, “A Diplomat in Japan”, “Made in America” and “Naked Making Lunch”).

Claire graduated with a B.A. Joint Honors in French and Spanish with Subsidiary Portuguese from Durham University in the UK.  She is Co-Chair of Student Admissions for the North American Development Board of Durham University. A longtime advocate for women’s equal opportunities in film and television, Claire has managed to help some of her female clients break the glass ceiling long before the current dialogue on the matter.  Claire is married to Television Writer/Producer Jordan Hawley. They have two daughters.
